Franciacorta Satèn: a bit of history

First of all, we need to specify that the word Satèn can only be found when we speak about Franciacorta wines. This peculiarity makes it an exclusive for this territory.

The history of Satèn is really particular and binds together France, Luxembourg and Italy.

Everything started in 1989, when with the European Legislation no. 2045/89 the word Crémant was standardized with the aim of designating products of well-defined origin, i.e. only sparkling wines produced in France and Luxembourg.

What does Crémant mean?

The word Crémant indicates sparkling wines with a lower carbon dioxide content, a detail which therefore determines a softer, more delicate and creamier foam. They have lighter bubbles and are characterized by a slightly lower internal pressure than classic sparkling wines.

The problem is that even in Franciacorta, a geographical area that includes 19 municipalities in the province of Brescia, Crémant sparkling wines were produced, so according to European legislation the name of the latter products had to be necessarily changed.

To do that, it was decided to entrust the task to a group of communication experts, to create from scratch an easily memorable name that would perfectly describe the organoleptic qualities of this type of Franciacorta wine.

From this research, the name Satèn was born.

What do we mean with Satèn?

Satèn” comes from “Satin”, that is a typology of a fine, smooth and soft fabric. The peculiarity of this name is that it has the same meaning both in English and French.

Even if the translation does not correspond, what the word generates at first glance is a certain assonance with the concept of “silk". The name was therefore also designed to associate this type of product with a feeling of silky and softness in the minds of consumers.

Franciacorta Satèn DOCG

The Satèn represents one of the three types of Franciacorta wine allowed by its product regulations and must necessarily be produced with the Classic Method and obtained from Chardonnay grapes for at least 50%. The Pinot White grape can contribute to its production for a maximum of 50%.

What emerges is that Satèn is by definition a “Blanc de Blancs”, i.e. a white Franciacorta wine obtained solely from white berry grapes. One-of-a-kind.

Organoleptic characteristics

The Satèn wine is in every way a qualitative and tasteful exception. It differs from the other types of Franciacorta wines for:

  • maximum pressure limit in the bottle: it must be less than 5 atmospheres, slightly lower than the others, where the pressure is around 6 and 6.5 atmospheres. This determines its typical softness and delicate taste.
  • limit the amount of sugar: the maximum allowed is 20 g/l, unlike the 24 g/l of other Franciacorta wines.
  • the sugar content is obligatorily Brut: unlike the other types, the final dosage must be equal to or less than 12 g/l and only the Brut type is allowed to be released for consumption.

The Franciacorta Satèn wine from Centinari

The Centinari Franciacorta Satèn wine is a bright yellow colour Millesimato, with a strong aroma that recalls hints of fresh fruit and white flowers and with light notes of almost toasted dried fruit.

Unlike the rule imposed by the Franciacorta regulations, which requires a minimum aging time for the Satèn Millesimato wines of at least 30 months, Centinari is constantly committed to improve some parameters.

Centinari Franciacorta Satèn in fact ages for at least 42 months on the yeasts in air-conditioned rooms. During this period bâtonnage is repeated manually and will characterize the gustatory and olfactory profile of Franciacorta.

An excellent wine result that has allowed the Satèn to win important recognitions such as the Double Gold medal at the international Gilbert & Gaillard 2023 competition or the gold medal at the famous Mundus Vini.

How to pair Satèn?

Centinari recommends pairing it with fish dishes. In particular, it is recommended to taste it with risottos based on sea fish and crunchy fried octopus.
